Prophet Jailed 7 Years For Running Out Of Court During Trial
Presiding Magistrate P.E. Nwaka of Ejigbo Court handed the sentence to Onwudinjo after he pleaded guilty to attempt to escape after he was brought to court for trial.
Prophet Onwudinjo caused a stir at the court recently when he suddenly jumped from the dock and ran out of the court where he was facing criminal charge of fraud and assault.
The prosecutor, Mr Femi Adeleye, and some of the court officials ran after him and re-arrested him along the street of Lagos.
His action disrupted the court’s proceedings as the litigants rushed out of the court due to the rowdiness that ensued.

Devilish Nigerian Nurse Arrested In The USA After Allegedly Killing Baby With Hot Water.
It was the second day that Oluyemisi Adebayo, 54, was caring for Naomi Mondesire at the child’s home on Memphis Ave. near 145th Ave. in Rosedale. The premature toddler was born at just 25 weeks and needed a tracheotomy tube to breathe. Naomi spent her first year in the hospital, her grandmother said, and still needed to be fed through a tube.
Around 7:25 p.m. on Saturday, Adebayo, a licensed practical nurse, submerged little Naomi in water so hot that it actually burned pieces of skin off the child, according to authorities. The young girl died Monday
“She couldn’t even scream,” said Naomi’s grandmother Gardite Mondesire, 54, who was at a nearby library when a tenant called her with the terrible news.
“When I got home, my tenant was running around picking up pieces of skin. It was all over the floor. It was all over the tub,” she said.
Mondesire called Adebayo and asked her what happened. “She said ‘It’s bad. I did something bad. The baby got burned,’” Mondesire said. “But she said she didn’t know how.”
Adebayo was arrested around 7a.m. Wednesday at Kennedy Airport as she tried to board a flight for Nigeria, where she is from, authorities said. She was charged with murder.
The toddler was rushed to Nassau
Despite Death Sentence, 19 Nigerians Try To Ship Drugs To Asia – NDLEA
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has said it saved 20 people from the death penalty in Asia by preventing them from smuggling drugs out of Nigeria.
In a statement Thursday, the agency said since January 2014, 19 Nigerians and a Ghanaian have been arrested in Nigerian airports attempting to smuggle 106,914 kilogrammes of narcotics.
“Sixteen of the suspects were apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos while four others including a Ghanaian were caught at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu,” said Ahmadu Giade, NDLEA’s Chairman.
“Their final destinations are Malaysia, China and Thailand where drug trafficking is punishable by death.”
On Tuesday, four Nigerians were among eight people executed by Indonesian authorities over drug-related offences.
While commiserating with the deceased families, the NDLEA urged relevant authorities to intensify anti-drug abuse campaign efforts.
“I sincerely sympathise with the families of the executed drug convicts,” Mr. Giade said.
“This is a moment of sober reflection on the illicit activities of drug trafficking syndicates. This brings to the fore the bigger picture of those in foreign prisons, those arrested here and others preparing to smuggle drugs.
“It is a wake-up call for stakeholders to step up their counter-narcotics efforts. Apart from drug trafficking being a criminal act, narcotic smuggling poses a serious threat to public health and safety.”
‘Highest criminal convictions’
According to Mr. Giade, the NDLEA has one of the highest criminal convictions in the country, winning 2,054 cases against alleged drug offenders.

Soccer legend John Fashanu has accused his wife of trying to kill him – after she allegedly found him bedding two women at the same time.

Fashanu, also a former Gladiators host, is now at the centre of a bitter divorce battle with Abigail – and insists SHE cheated on him with a woman.
She denies his claims and the astonishing battle – which includes the accusation that he bedded their maid – is to be played out in the high court in Abuja, Nigeria.
Furious Abigail, 48, said last night: “Good riddance to bad rubbish! I’ve left him and washed my hands.”

their businesses

Google could face a fine of up to $6.6bn (£4.4bn) after the European Commission began to update its evidence against the search engine – signalling that Brussels has decided to launch a full-blown legal challenge into its dominance.
The newly installed competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, whose political career inspired the blockbuster television series Borgen in her native Denmark, has begun updating evidence against Google and weighing whether to ramp up Europe’s five-year probe into Google’s search practices by releasing a new statement of objections.
More than 30 companies from Europe and the United States, including travel websites Expedia and Trip Advisor, price-comparison sites Nextag and Foundem, and the software group Microsoft, have complained that Google is harming their businesses.
The suggestion from Brussels is that Vestager has decided to take their cases forward, which could result in Google being fined up to 10% of its worldwide revenues, which were $66bn in 2014. The commission has in recent days contacted most of the complainants

Iran nuclear talks: Obama hails 'historic' agreement as Iranians celebrate
On Thursday, news of the framework announcement broke as Iranians celebrated the final night of the new year holidays, Nowruz
Iranians celebrate the new year in March, to coincide with the spring vernal equinox. This year, Nowruz began on March 21, marking the beginning of the year 1393 in the Persian calendar. Nowruz is a secular festival that is also celebrated in neighboring countries, like Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The Guardian’s Tehran Bureau wrote recently of Nowruz:
The time and date of Nowruz varies every year but the same traditions are always observed – beginning with fire jumping on the last Tuesday of the old year and ending with a national picnic on the 13th day of the new year. The festival centres around the Haft Sin arrangement, where seven items, all beginning with the sound of ‘S’ in Persian, are placed on a table or the floor to symbolise health, prosperity and renewed life.
Obama phoned Binyamin Netanyahu on Thursday to discuss the latest breakthrough in nuclear negotiations, according to a statement provided by the White House, reports Sabrina Siddiqui:
Here’s a round-up of some of the night’s vines, tweets and instagrams from the streets of Tehra.
Reuters is reporting that President Obama called Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud on Thursday to discuss the deal international negotiators reached with Iran on its nuclear program.
Obama invited Salman and the Gulf Cooperation Council to Camp David for a summit to continue conversations on Iran, the White House said.
Saudi Arabi, Iran’s main regional rival, has long made clear its unhappiness with the emerging deal, the Guardian’s Middle East editor Ian Black wrote on Monday:
Still, unlike Israel, which flatly opposes any agreement, Saudi Arabia has adopted a more subtle approach. [...]
The Saudis have hinted for years that they would turn to Pakistan if they felt threatened by a nuclear Iran. Last year they displayed their Chinese-made intermediate-range ballistic missiles — capable of reaching Tehran — at a parade attended by the general who controls Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal. It was, said the Brookings Institution analyst Bruce Riedel, “ a very calculated signal”.
But the Saudis have wider concerns: an American-Iranian rapprochement, they fear, will undermine their own influence and security. Prince Turki al-Faisal, the former Saudi intelligence chief, warned in London earlier this month that the romance was now “nearing consummation”.
For more than 10 years, diplomatic attempts have been made to address Iran’s nuclear policy. Here’s a useful timeline of the nuclear talks so far, going back to August 2002.

The arms-proliferation experts at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace are giving Thursday’s nuclear deal with Iran a passing grade, reports the Guardian’s Spencer Ackerman: They have pronounced themselves pleasantly surprised by the strength of the deal’s restrictions and verification measures and sanguine about some of its areas of technical vagueness.
George Perkovich, Carnegie’s vice-president, said the deal’s provisions to monitor the entire Iranian nuclear supply chain will give the US and its allies enhanced visibility to prevent a so-called “sneak-out” – a surreptitious Iranian path to a bomb. “It’s a very positive development and represents significant progress,” Perkovich said on a conference call with reporters.
Carnegie analyst James Acton, a physicist, said the framework deal’s lack of specificity on what happens to Iran’s stockpile of 9,700 kg of low-enriched uranium was not a significant proliferation risk. Either Iran will have to “down-blend” it to natural uranium or, as has been suggested in the past, it will ship it out to Russia. “My guess is they haven’t decided,” Acton said. (Under the framework, Iran will retain 300 kg of low-enriched uranium.)

Many Iranians bypassed the state’s strict internet filter system, to post celebratory pictures on social media sites. The President emphasized that, while nothing is agreed until everything is, the framework represents significant progress towards a lasting, comprehensive solution that cuts off all of Iran’s pathways to a bomb and verifiably ensures the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program going forward. He underscored that progress on the nuclear issue in no way diminishes our concerns with respect to Iran’s sponsorship of terrorism and threats towards Israel and emphasized that the United States remains steadfast in our commitment to the security of Israel. The President told the Prime Minister that he has directed his national security team to increase consultations with the new Israeli government about how we can further strengthen our long-term security cooperation with Israel and remain vigilant in countering Iran’s threats.”
Earlier in the day, Obama acknowledged in public remarks that he and the Israeli prime minister disagree on the US efforts to secure a nuclear deal with Iran. Tension between the two world leaders has escalated in recent weeks amid the negotiations, but Obama reiterated his commitment to Israel when addressing the tentative framework.

Nigeria’s new president Muhammadu Buhari – the man who jailed Fela Kuti
The newly elected leader of Nigeria was once a military dictator who
jailed the musician on trumped-up charges. But the Afrobeat hero and
fierce critic of corruption was not easily silenced.

Fela Kuti would surely have been delighted at the first peaceful handover of power in Africa’s biggest democracy, but horrified by the return of Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s new president. Fela, Nigeria’s greatest and most influential musician, was a brave and outrageous political campaigner who spent much of his life furiously attacking his country’s successive military leaders. He was arrested 200 times by different regimes, but only kept in jail for a lengthy period of time by (then) Major-General Buhari, who first came to power in a military coup in December 1983.Fela was sentenced by a military tribunal to five years’ imprisonment on what he always insisted were trumped-up currency charges, but he was released after a year and a half, following another change of military regime.
Fela’s musician son Seun Kuti has since attacked Buhari, saying: “For you to jail that man you must be inherently evil.” Buhari was something of a quirky authoritarian: he became notorious for his “war against indiscipline” in which soldiers whipped commuters to make sure they formed orderly queues at bus stops, and civil servants who arrived late for work were ordered to perform frog squats. As for the charge that led to Fela’s imprisonment, it seems like a petty matter in which the musician was indeed innocent, but which was used by the authorities to keep him quiet. In September 1984, he and his band were at Lagos

Ultra-traditional Catholics rebel against pope in Brazil: ‘He is less Catholic than us’
A ceremony at the monastery outside Nova Friburgo in south-eastern Brazil. Photograph:
In a secluded monastery in south-eastern Brazil, a breakaway group of ultra-conservative Catholics gathered to participate in an act of rebellion against the pope.
The setting could hardly have been more tranquil: rolling green hills, purple-glory trees, palm leaves swaying in the wind and a temporary chapel made of breeze block walls and a tin roof left partially open to the elements.
But the 50 or so priests, Benedictine monks, nuns and other worshippers who file into Santa Cruz monastery on Saturday were no ordinary congregation. Hailing from Europe, the US and Latin America, they described themselves as a “resistance” movement against reforms.

Made in Britain? The Saudi-led attack on a Yemeni refugee camp

On Monday, a Saudi-led coalition apparently dropped bombs on a refugee camp in northern Yemen. It’s perfectly likely that, as they have admitted before, the Saudis may have used jet fighters that were made in the UK. After all, Saudi Arabia is the UK defence industry’s largest export market. More than 40 innocent people died. Around 200 were injured, many seriously. The Yemeni state news agency showed pictures of dead children laid out on the floor.
Apparently, the Saudis were trying to hit a nearby Houthi rebel position. “It could have been that the fighter jets replied to fire, and we cannot confirm that it was a refugee camp,” said a spokesman for the Saudi regime, lamely. Well yes, it was a refugee camp, confirmed the UN. And if the Saudis invade Yemen, thus further extending the widening gyre of Sunni/Shia conflict, expect a lot more of the same. For if you think the Middle East could not get any worse, think again. And if you think it has little to do with us, that’s because

What a wickid world Hong Kong man who salted and cooked parents jailed for life on March 23, 2015 / in News 1:09 pm
A Hong Kong man who killed, dismembered, salted and cooked his parents was sent to prison for life on Monday after being found guilty of double murder. The conviction of Henry Chau, 31, on Friday concluded a gruesome case that shocked the city in 2013 when the severed heads of Chau’s elderly parents were found stuffed into two refrigerators.
During the 20-day trial at the city’s high court, the jury heard how Chau had dismembered his elderly parents before salting, cooking and packing their body parts into lunchboxes “like barbecued pork”.
“Your sentence on Count 1 and Count 2 is that you go to prison for life,” judge Michael Stuart-Moore told Chau, referring to the double murder charges. Sitting in the defendant’s dock, Chau, who wore a loose-fitting grey suit, looked impassive

The Tunisian president, Beji Caid Essebsi, said security “failures” facilitated the deadly attack claimed by Isis on the country’s national museum, which killed 20 foreign tourists.
“There were failures” which meant that “the police and intelligence were not systematic enough to ensure the safety of the museum”, Essebsi told the Paris Match weekly in an interview published on Saturday.
Twenty-one people, all but one of them foreign tourists, were killed when two gunmen stormed the National Bardo Museum in the capital Tunis on Wednesday.

‘World’s worst team’ Bhutan aim to make history against Sri Lanka
Bhutan have won only four games in 33 years and once lost a match 20–0 –
but the tiny Himalayan country now stand on the brink of an
unimaginable success against Sri Lanka in the 2018 World Cup qualifers

Thimphu is hard to reach and, as the world’s third-highest capital city at 2,648m, even tougher for the unacclimatised to play a potential 120 minutes of football in. But it is safe to say that Sri Lanka’s footballers were not expecting a task of the gravity they will face on Tuesday, when they must overturn a 1-0 deficit in Bhutan against a team that sit bottom – at 209 – of Fifa’s world rankings and are inevitable dubbed the world’s worst as a consequence.
Nobody gave the tiny Himalayan country a chance in their first-ever World Cup qualifier last Thursday but a late winner from Tshering Dorji gave them a hitherto-unthinkable lead that they feel optimistic of retaining in the rarefied air of Changlimithang Stadium.
“Everyone was talking about us being at the bottom but we didn’t feel any pressure because you can only go one way from there and that’s upwards,” the Bhutan captain, Karma Shedrup Tshering, tells the Guardian. “All the expectation was on Sri Lanka and they were talking a lot about beating us, but we kept our calm and let our football talk for us.”
The Fifa rankings are not always the most accurate barometer and teams can be blessed or cursed by playing a smaller number of games than others – with some strange-looking changes resulting. Tuesday’s match will only be Bhutan’s 60th official fixture since 1982, and the remarkable win in Colombo was only their fourth. They have not played a game in Thimphu since April 2003.
Such a record gives little scope for a leap in the other direction and what publicity Bhutan’s team have attracted owes entirely to their lowly position. In 2002 they participated in the ‘Other Final’ against Montserrat, winning 4-0 in a game arranged between the two lowest teams in the rankings (Montserrat were bottom) and marketed to provide an alternative to the World Cup final. Less positively, a then-world record 20-0 defeat in Kuwait received inevitable attention in 2000.
“Our coach, Chokey Nima, played in that game but most of our players were hardly old enough to walk or talk when it happened,” says Tshering. “None

Jordan Henderson’s luck brings Liverpool victory at Swansea

Manchester United are back in view as the Liverpool bandwagon rolls
on, courtesy of a huge slice of good fortune on what could prove to be a
critical night in their quest for a place in the top four. Jordan
Henderson knew little about the goal that settled this contest but that
will matter little to a Liverpool side who racked up a fifth successive Premier League victory to close the gap to United to two points before Sunday’s pivotal meeting at Anfield.
Steven Gerrard had been thrown into the fray four minutes earlier as he made his comeback from injury from the bench, but it was the man who has taken over the captaincy from him who struck the critical blow. Jordi Amat got to the ball first as Henderson burst through the middle in the 68th minute but the Spaniard, making his first start in the league since September, inadvertently knocked the ball off the England international and Lukasz Fabianski was left stranded as it sailed over his head.

Spanish convents use social media to recruit new nuns
Dwindling numbers of women joining religious orders has prompted convents to modernise their marketing methods
Stephen Burgen in Barcelona
The woman is Noemí Saiz, and the website, which translates as “I’m looking for something more”, is used by dozens of Spanish convents to try to recruit nuns. Spain’s religious orders, which are also turning to Facebook, WhatsApp and other social networks as recruitment tools, are facing an uphill struggle: their numbers have slumped from 6,695 in 1966 to barely 250 today.
“The website serves as an intermediary between religious orders and young people,” says Saiz, who spent a year as a nun before deciding she didn’t have what it takes. “Religious institutions need to learn about marketing.”
Convents are learning fast and some have even taken advice on search engine optimisation in order to top Google rankings for terms such as “how to become a nun”.
In 2012 Olga María, the prioress of the barefoot Carmelite convent in Valladolid in north-east Spain, went to Rome to ask for two things: permission to let would-be nuns join the convent for a trial period to see if it suited them and also permission to use social networks to recruit young women.
Nurul Izzah Anwar's arrest criticised as attempt to silence Malaysian opposition
People’s Justice party vice president, and daughter of jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, detained over parliament speech – where she has immunity.
Malaysian police have arrested the eldest daughter of jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for alleged sedition on Monday, in a move slammed by critics as a clampdown on dissent.
Nurul Izzah Anwar was detained to assist police in their investigation of an opposition rally and also for making “contemptuous remarks that those in the judiciary system had sold their souls to the devil,” national police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement.
A lawmaker and a vice president of her father’s People’s Justice party, Nurul Izzah was detained because of a speech she made last week in parliament, said

Burnley have Sunderland in their sights after this deserved win, and quite possibly Hull City and Everton too. Sean Dyche’s side were unable to climb out of the bottom three with victory over Manchester City, but they are now just a point behind the side in 17th place and in no danger of changing their manager.
City will now be officially concentrating on making progress in Europe, where they must overcome a 2-1 deficit from the first leg against Barcelona to survive at Camp Nou on Wednesday. In truth this was such a lethargic, uninspired display

John Terry has admitted Chelsea’s willingness to surround referees “does not look good at all” but he and his team-mates will continue to support each other in that way if they feel opponents, such as Paris Saint-Germain, are attempting to exert their own influence on the officials.
Nine of the London club’s outfield players had crowded around the Dutch referee, Bjorn Kuipers, following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s challenge on Oscar just after the half-hour mark in the second leg of the teams’ Champions League knockout tie on Wednesday with the Brazilian prone on the turf. That reaction was branded “disgraceful” at the time by the former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher in his capacity as a pundit for Sky.
Ibrahimovic suggested the Chelsea players had reacted “like babies” yet Terry argued that PSG, who prevailed on away goals after extra time despite having

Tanzania police arrest 32 witch-doctors over ritual albino killings

Police in Tanzania said on Friday they had arrested 32 witch-doctors this week as part of a campaign against ritual killings of albinos.
Activists say attackers have killed at least 75 albinos in the east African country since 2000 to use their limbs and other body parts as charms meant to guarantee success in love, life and business.
President Jakaya Kikwete last week vowed to stamp out the practice he said brought shame on to the east African country, and albino campaigners
