Abuja—A Peoples Democratic Party governorship aspirant in Imo State, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, has advanced reasons he was running to take over the mantle of leadership of the state from Governor Rochas Okorocha.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Ararume pointed out that the inability of successive governments in the state to resolve the lingering development challenges facing the people propelled him into the governorship race.
He said: “I really want the opportunity to be able to salvage the “heartland of Igboland.“ For me, I had the aspiration first in 2007 but it didn’t work out
that time. “I strongly believe that Imo State being the heartland of the South East will work well and serve its people if the right leadership is in place.
“In our educational system, the governor we had that time, Chief Achike Udenwa did his best. But you know governance and government are a continuum because at that time he did his best and I felt that those things that he tried to do are things that we can build on to further develop the state.
“Nearly eight years after, those problems are still unsolved and because the state is still in dire need of help and our people believe that I have what it takes to bring answers to their problems. That is why I am in the race.
“So I know I have something unique to impart to the people of the state because of my rich background as a two-term Senator, a businessman and long standing history in philanthropy in my state and Nigeria.”
Reacting to the ceasefire recently signed by Nigeria and the Boko Haram sect, Ararume lauded the Federal Government for brokering the peace deal with the insurgents in far away Saudi Arabia.
He said given the delicate nature of the matter, the President deserved kudos for achieving the feat.
“The first is to congratulate Mr President. I know what it is; it is not easy to achieve this feat. If you know what is happening globally now, you will congratulate our President. Wherever you have this kind of insurgency it is not easy to deal with.”
